House in Broome
The idea of this house design is that it becomes self-shading and self-cooling. The walls are angled outwards to reduce solar gain on them, and in the plan, the house is shaped like an armadillo to promote better ventilation. The shape of the plan wraps around a semi-courtyard space, something we enjoy working with. The living area and kitchen both open onto generous covered outdoor living spaces under the same roof line, allowing a better life in the heat.
The house's geometry builds connections between the spaces within each other. Windows are large but private, rooms are connected yet private, and the function of the house becomes a sustainable machine for living in.
